First Offense DUI in Georgia
Minimizing Penalties and Protecting Your Driver’s License
If you have been arrested for your first DUI in Georgia, you are likely feeling anxious about the future. While a first offense is generally treated as a misdemeanor, the State of Georgia takes drunk driving very seriously, and the penalties can be severe.
Potential Penalties for a 1st DUI
- 10 days to 12 months in jail (often mostly probated)
- Fines ranging from $300 to $1,000
- Up to 12 months of probation
- Minimum of 40 hours of community service
- DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program (DUI School)
- Substance abuse evaluation and treatment
- Suspension of your driver’s license for up to 12 months

The 30-Day Warning: Saving Your License
CRITICAL DEADLINE: You only have 30 days from the date of your arrest to request an Administrative License Suspension (ALS) hearing or install an ignition interlock device. If you fail to act within 30 days, your driver’s license will be automatically suspended before you even go to criminal court.
Attorney Gordon Hall can file this appeal on your behalf and represent you at the ALS hearing to help you keep your driving privileges.
